Frank Lobdell was one of my instructors at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1963. He influenced my student work before I was in his class, and began doing op art. I remember that he told me that, to paraphrase, "Sometimes it is not what one puts into a painting, but rather what one leaves out that makes it a compelling picture."
