Sam Francis

Sam Francis
Dark Beams,
1978
29 1/2 x 41 1/8 inches (74.90 x 104.50 cm)
Acrylic on Paper

Francis is an anomaly: an American artist whose work and public acceptance were — at least in the beginning — as much Parisian as American; a Northern California painter whose “feel” is — if local at all — Southern Californian [airy, oceanic, pretty]. He is also considered the third member of a West Coast post-war triumvirate of "major" artists, with Tobey and Diebenkorn.
