Sihvonen

Oli Sihvonen, (1921-1991), Untitled (Ladder Series), 1984 , 66 x 80 inches, Oil on canvas

Oli Sihvonen was born in Brooklyn of Finnish ancestry. Sihvonen attended the Art Students League in New York. After World War II he studied painting with Josef Albers, and became immersed in the color theories of his teacher, a direct link to the Bauhaus tradition in Germany and to Klee and Kandinsky. In 1948 Sihvonen moved to Taos, New Mexico, and worked there until national recognition prompted his move to New York. He is one of the relatively unknown and neglected Taos Modernists.
