911-Eyewitness Report

September 16, 2001
— JL—

They waited until all the suckers got to work.

Dear Friends,

We are not allowed down to get close to the wreckage. We can only see it from a few blocks away. Many buildings in the surrounding area were covered in debris and dust, and some may have to be demolished, perhaps in the long run due to structural damage. I don't think they know yet how bad that damage actually may be.

I feel so sorry for the firefighters and police who lost friends and associates, and for Mayor Giuliani who lost some people he knew well. The firemen lost many of their ranks from being on the front line to help. It seems very unfair. You can see on their faces how shaken they are.

When we first ran out to the corner that morning one of the workers who was running up from Wall Street area said to her friend. "They waited until all the suckers got to work to do this, they could have hit the building when there wasn't anybody in it, but they waited until everyone came to work!" I'll never forget h! ow she said it. (Luckily not everyone who could have had arrived at work yet, as it was just before nine — but many had.)

Love again,
JL
